Leones film is a flawed masterpiece but a masterpiece nonetheless. But anyone who doubts De Niro’s command of the screen need only watch the scene where he does nothing but stir and drink coffee in a 90 second close up. And we are all mesmerized. The nearly full theatre was completely silent the first time I saw it.

The long version is a masterpiece. The studio in 1980’s chopped it up and the film lost at the box office. Too bad. Great film.
