  1. Weird project and weird video. Saying you hate your own work, makes me not want to believe you got the chops to get it done. Just my take on it.

  2. Every once in a while you watch a video in which your are forced to confront a part of herself that you had hoped didn’t exist. I thought I was a good person. But I got a whole lot of enjoyment out of watching the suffering in this video. I am sorry but thank you very very very much for sharing. :).

  3. To quote Paulie the first time he saw Punchy in Rocky Balboa (Rocky 6): "what an ugly dog"

nice video though, and the shadow foot made out of metal sheet was a really good idea!

  4. Another YouTuber, Stumpy Nubs, did a video on glue awhile back. Talked about all the different kinds to use and their shelf lives. Think he said CA glue is around a year.

Great channel for those starting out all the way up to expert.

  5. You should get rid of the metal. And flip the wood leg up side down. And put the top on the bottom. That might fix your mistake and it might look good.

While watching the vid and you had it upside down it looked good to me.

It’s not your best piece as a whole, but your willingness to cross the line between woodworking and art is a risk worth taking. It’s the difference between being one of the many guys duplicating the work we’ve seen a million times before and making something truly unique. Every furniture designer who made a name for themselves did so by making something no one had seen before. I’m sure they did not love every piece they made. Keep pushing the limits of your creativity.

Side note: Even on a piece that doesn’t work together. As individual parts the work is quality. The top looks great. As for the base, your power carving skills are admirable. Perhaps they just don’t belong together.

  7. Have you tried building with tree branches? I've seen some canes and simple chairs that were built use branches or small logs and I'm wondering how squirrelly your version would be.

  8. Hey John love the channel I build kayaks for fun so I've got basically no wood working skill but have you ever thought to build a wire or metal frame before you put the wood together? You'd have to cut small prices and drill the holes for the wire or maybe burn through the wood? But I feel like them you wouldn't break so many :p just saying might be a squirrel idea

  9. I like projects like this… it can be crazy listening to him while he goes down the rabbit hole trying to figure out what he's doing but I like projects like this. Question why not start out with thicker pieces then shaping what he want then just gluing a bunch of little pieces then shaping?? I can't wait to see the next crazy project

  10. Hey John, I have the solution to your joinery problems. I have been using bamboo skewers for dowel joinery and find it to be a noticeably stronger joint. I have done several videos on different uses. You can find them in my channel playlist "BS Joinery" if interested. Just buy a batch of skewers, the right size 6" long drill bit and start gluing them in from all different angles into the joint. Good luck and keep the great videos coming.

  11. Have you ever tried putting lead in drilled holes in the bottom to weight stuff down? or stack steel in bored out holes in the base if you dont like lead.

  12. I love this! I think the problem with the bottom is that a tree is round. If the roots came out on the ground all around it would look symmetrical. I think that’s what’s missing

  13. I like the fact that you left all your self-doubt and anxiety in the video. So many of us go through projects and are kind of faking our way through it until things solidify. It was cool to see you work through that instead of just trying to edit things to appear masterful throughout.

  14. Love all the crazy squarely project. I love the concept of the tree holding up the table. Just revisit the idea. This one did look like deer antlers holding up a box but you have to start some were! Keep up the amazing vids man!

  15. Wowsers that is Definitely unique an very creative. Can't wait to see more videos soon boys. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friends. Weld on. Keep Making. Stay Squirrely. God Bless.

  16. I hated it at first, but it turned out pretty cool in the end. So much work to recreate organic shapes…I'll stick with lame squares/miters for now.

  17. "Since becoming a father, I've decided to make it one of my goals to not die." -John Malecki

New favorite quote. For real though, becoming a parent changes your priorities!

  18. The result was worth the effort! Very cool indeed! The juxtaposition of the dark, crisp, angular top and the light, curvy, organic base might not be my style, but it's eye-catching. You're quite the artist.
