I’ve heard Mr. Alonzo talk about shooting this movie. There are a couple of interesting stories. One is in Catalina, there’s a closeup shot of someone in the foreground, and some random stuff in the background. Included in the background is a fairly evident, 1970s era VW van. Very anachronistic. Alonzo said that when he composed the shot the background was completely soft and you couldn’t distinguish the VW. But then he must have stopped down the aperture or something, because it’s sure as hell visible in the shot in the film!
Second story. The finale of the film with everyone milling around in the street. Polanski wanted the camera right up in the main characters’ faces. Alonzo told him he couldn’t, that with the lighting being used you would see the shadow of the camera on their faces. The solution was to cut out a piece of cardboard in the shape of a fedora hat, and stick it on the end of the camera lens. So if you see a shadow on someone that looks like someone’s hat, that’s the camera!
The Panaflex prototype again. Lock and tachometer/footage counter were painted black at serial models. Viewfinder looks also different, maybe with a prism element.
