This film was written as a sequel to a move Sinatra had done. Sinatra had asked for it to be written but it took so long that by the time it was done, he was too old. They still had to ask him. After that the book was turned into a screenplay but they were writing it as they filmed.
There is a good documentary on more of this movie. The fire hose bit was a Harold Lloyd invention from the silent film days. They did it because it was a great bit known and they loved his work.
The story I read went something like “we’ll drop you on 3” and then they dropped him on 1, which apparently made for this look in his eyes.
Of course Alan Rickman was a great actor and I doubt he needed any tricks to act convincingly. But this was his first major film role. I miss him.
“Happy trails Hans!”

Alan Rickman’s look of shock and terror as he fell was real. The crew released him earlier than he expected without telling him they were ready.
Richard Edlund filming the time lapse sequence.
Thor Niels Fejerskov Jensen 😉
RIP Mr Rickman you bloody legend
And they also developed a laser-driven automatic focus assist to keep Rickman in focus while he falls. https://www.thrillist.com/entertainment/nation/die-hard-30th-anniversary
