Great Project
Great video… very much appreciated.
Given 1 automatic blast gate is AU$199 to AU$249 each it gives a lot of room for huge savings and customization. I have a heap of micro controllers already so would use a Teensy with SD card and OLED display. That way it could be driven by a simple INI file and the OLED could be used to display info when in use.
This could incorporate a minimum run time and how long to stay on and open when the machine turns off. With the inbuilt clock the Teensy could keep track of accumulated run time and even sense when your bag needs to be emptied and hence not turn on when full.
We're getting a X-TOOL laser cutter so this looks like the perfect start project.
My shop has all 24V DC lights so the Arduino can hook into this. Also quite sure can sense if a device is on or off in a non-invasive way and… lastly have to allow for battery powered tools as my mitre saw and drills are all cordless.
Great video. In laying out my circuitry I"m wondering if i could control the blast gates with a Nano at each one so the voltage detector would wire to the nano and go directly to the blast gate so as to not have so much wire travelling back and forth. The Uno would control the Motor Relay and go only to the Dust collector. Any reason that's not a good idea?
I used an Arduino to detect current to flip a relay and power a shop vac.
You can make a simple current-detecting transformer by making a few wraps of thin (22-26 gauge) insulated wire around a ferret and using an interrupt pin on the Arduino to detect a small, momentary change in voltage. Put the insulated load wire through the ferret and when current flows the thin wires will trigger the interrupt on the Arduino. Easy, inexpensive and safe. (Digi-key carries many cheap ferrets)
I used an output from the Arduino to switch a transistor that can handle the current to power a 5-volt relay with high, inductive load capacity.
I don't see the new beefier relay posted?
What laser cutter do you have and on what settings for the thickness of the wood did you use?
My dust collector, table saw, jointer, bandsaw, and planer all work off of 230V. What relays should I use for those?
Grounding PVC does nothing, it's an insulator. The pipe would need to be conductive for the electricity to flow through the grounding wire
Not sure if you still have the but I’d love to see a video or two on those old lawn boys in the background
Splendid setup.
Any special reason why are you using a 30A relay instead of a 20A relay when your house wiring is probably 15 or 20A?
How has this system held up over the past few years? I watched this video when you put it out and was very impressed. I recently moved into a new larger shop and am looking to automate my dust collection system and am considering using this method.
What do you do with the saw dust!?
Are there measurements on the acrylic cutout and the wooden cutout that are attached to the servo and blast gate?
Not efficient design. Why Arduino when you can do it passive?
I have made a blast gate using the same gate and servo as listed in your links but my gate does not switch between the open and closed positions smoothly. The gate seems to hang up and get stuck as it is switched. I discovered there were some bosses inside the gate that initially hung it up but I filed them smooth and the problem still exists. I have created a couple of actuators, one plywood and the other plastic and both have the same problem.
Did you ever figure out the relay?
I have been buying all the parts to make this controller. But can not find a wiring schematic, is there anyone that can help…
I know you've found a solution already but for anyone else with a similar issue like the shop vac relay issue at the end… You could use two relays in parallel to carry more current. Just splice the signal wire to each one and combine the outputs back into one to go into the vac.
That intro just earned you a thumbs up my friend.
Hey Bob, awesome job! I love the whole idea of automation! Will this work with a 220 plug?
Wow, arduino is so amazing! I have yet to start doing projects like this with them, but I think I might start soon
Cool stuff thank you, this has been very helpful.
How did you go with the bigger really and did your extractor have an NVR type switch?
My 2 horsepower extractor has one of these and I am not shore how to go about converting it to be triggered by a relay.
Thanks for your entertaining and informative work, Bob. In this video you use a heavier servo; is that because the gates are harder to move under load when the collector is on?
This is garbage. It's just one more case of some pedantic jackass making something WAY too complicated just because he can. Can you IMAGINE how often this thing glitches and crashes? The maintenance alone on the system would make this a ridiculous non-starter. Hard, hard pass.
Awesome! I love all this stuff even though I have no idea how to do it myself. I'm 77 years old but that's just my body. My mind is that of a 12 year old and I'm deperately trying to soak up all the knowledge I can before my body gives out. Keep up the great work and all the super how-to videos.
4:35 if you just care about the automation.
AWESOME SAUCE! building this now.
Awesome, love it! Love your channel , keep up the great work.
I love the small clear box that holds the electronics…
Very cool.
I follow your channel a lot. It would be convenient to have the wifi connection between the arduino module and the ACS712 module to eliminate all cable connections. Who knows if it is possible?
Great video and great system. I am planning to add the automation to my existing DC system and would like to know if you are satisfied with the servos you used or would you recommend different ones today? I use 6" blast gates if that influences your thinking. Thanks.
HEY
the floor sweep has 1 switch beside it for automation
Extremely over complicated for a very simple task. Could be done much easier electrically.
I can’t find that tape that you wrapped round the timber to keep the hose in place in the Uk, what’s it called please?? The one with the holes in.
