Syros initially is disappointing on arrival as the port seems vaguely industrial, but short walk it soon becomes pretty and Syros is much more of a living Greek island than a tourist trap! Think this is the Orthodox cathedral that sits on top of 1 of the twin peaks that dominate the town the other hill being capped by the Roman Catholic cathedral!

At 7 a.m. see Ios, surprisingly fertile. Arrive at Syros at about 2.30, where we take a room in the Chios Hotel overlooking the sea. A marvellous town with cobbled and paved streets, steep steps lead everywhere to the two hills that dominate the town, one Orthodox, the other Catholic. The square is one of the prettiest I’ve seen. My window overlooks caiques at anchor. At night we see the film Lawrence of Arabia outdoors among the palm trees at the Pallas and I am just as impressed as the first time I saw it. Eat heartily (local cheese good) and I’m very tired.
