This was just a documentation of common practice at the time. Prisoners were only allowed to walk in circles at the yard. And it was enforced all over Europe. That’s it. Saying that some Van Gogh painting inspired other depictions of prisoners walking around like this is similar to saying that every castaway painting or movie is derived from Géricault.
I walked with other souls in pain, within another ring,
And I wondered if the man had done a great or little thing,

Could add Midnight Express to this too.
And both are inspired from Dore’s engraving from London: A Pilgrimage (1872)! Such a cool example of the family tree of inspiration…
Is this really a van Gogh? Im trying to remember if I saw this one in my 2 volume book of paintings by him. But I will check again. The subject is of course dark & grim like most of his paintings when he is still in the Netherlands.
