  1. What a shame… with so much to offer, and ALL her experiences… HAIR was the Victorian woman’s claim to fame?? Some how I don’t think so.

  2. They also didn’t dye or bleach their hair. They generally wore hats & bonnets when outside. Not to mention – most had no indoor plumbing and definitely no showers. It would be a big job to wash and comb out.

  3. My grandmother always say. The beauty of a women is their long hair and slim body. Women looks a lot more attractive.

  4. I have never found extremely long hair to be attractive. In fact, I think it’s gross. Waist length can be beautiful, if a person has nice healthy hair, but beyond that it just looks shabby.

  5. But oh, the hypocrisy. Women were expected to cover their hair in public, especially in church, lest they arouse male attention.

  6. My grandmother grew up in Ireland and she had very long hair as a young woman, she told me they use to wash it in a rain barrel of water !

  7. My grandma’s sister had very long hair, one night she was brushing it in front of the fire and she burnt to death when it caught fire .

  8. I worked with a girl many years ago who’s hair was so long that it would drag on the step behind her when she went downstairs. It was very beautiful. She would sometimes come to work with it still damp from washing it. She would push her chair way back from her desk, let it down, then roll up to the desk and let it lie on the floor to dry.

  9. It is the reason why French and English women in 1930’s cut their hair short….to define their identity with the personal freedom. My personal belief is, to seeing cultures which expecting covering the women hair are the sign of men dominance over their women.

  10. Wow!! What an inconvenience, being ‘herself” not enough ‘she’ had to grow long hair to be seen as worthy🙄.

  11. Hair like this signified that the woman (or her family) had servants, rather than being a servant or working in any capacity. Maids or factory workers obviously could not wear their hair this way, as it would be impractical or dangerous.

  12. Isn’t it the same today? I feel my hair is my mane… My source of power. What makes me the lion i truly am. 🦁

  13. Always had long hair. Just a long hair girl but I would get it thinned because of headaches. No wonder women in the Victorian era always complained of headaches and fainting spells. Between the corsets and the long hair. A lot of the beauty and grooming products they used turned out to be toxic too so there’s that…

  14. this photo reminds me my grandmother her name was Rosaria she was born in a little village in the region calabria Italy in 1900 I saw only a few times but I remember her very long hair! like the ladies in the photo ..so the victorian style arrived every where in europe

  15. My adoptive mother Iiked to hit me, and she would cut my hair off. Told people I did it…that my injuries were because I was clumsy.

  16. My mom wouldn’t let me cut my hair until I was 13 and the summer I was 13 I went to town and had it cut short and it has never been very long again

  17. Whereas over a hundred years later, men seem to keep their hair long and blue,
without realising it might not bode well for their prospects of getting a decent not so halfwitted girlfriend nor wife.
