Subways was the Black Board JungleMovie , flob houses .. tattoo , pawn shops , stop joints .. burlesques old buildings that was version of old New York .. East side Little Italy , Chinatown another era 50s 60s!!
How I would love to go back to that time and see all that signage, especially at night. NYC has been sanitized so much that you see zero neon anymore. Absolutely nothing. Electronic signage galore, but no neon. And that’s sad.
Geeze, no “The Lion King” cluttering up Times Square? I am just sick of seeing that out there for the past 30 years or so. Broadway is for real plays, not Disney trying to take everything over! If my kids wanted to see a Disney movie, that’s 1 thing but the cost to go to Disney plays is ridiculous!
I used to go with my Uncle back in the seventies to a place called the New York experience and It was Filled with stuff New York related to interact with, and I can’t find anything on it
I was there in 1946! It was beautiful. People were polite and the street-vendors, wow, I can´t forget those hot dogs! Juicy sauerkraut mustard and great tasting ketchup! But then… the ice cream and cream sodas!
To me the city was heaven, I was 10 years old!
Needs more advertising..
NYC seemed so much easier back then until you read Last Exit to Brooklyn.
Yes the year i was born 1955
I was 1 year old when this picture was taken. My dad was a cop in Manhattan for 22 years (1946-1968).
Cash less bail. Nope
Now it’s a Hell hole
Harbinger of horrors to.come. in my opinion.
Ah, yes. I was there in 1957, living in Queens.
Oh look, North American products being advertised!
The beauty of capitalism..
I was there less than two years later.
Love the Chevrolet Emblem!
A Storm is brewing and will land here and everywhere in one years time….
Elvis. 💥
Who remembers the “peep shows” on 42nd street?
Notice how clean it is
Canadian Club Whiskey is Canadian and is on a big bill board back then in Manhattan. How about that
Way much better back then!
The people of this generation would hate what we are becoming. Love the pics though 😀
Before Bruce Springsteen 😁❤️
I was 11 years old and living in Brooklyn 762 Hendrix street and going to p.s. 213.

Michael Corleone was in charge back then.
Look, it looks like there’s room to breathe then.
I was there back in 1955 when I was 10, then again in 1957, remember it all well and the Camel cigarette billboard in Times Square!
I was there at that time
Brings back lots of memories

I wonder what people in 1950s New York think about it today. So much has changed.
